Within the thirty-four square miles of German Township, we maintain over forty miles of roadway. Clark County maintains Folk Ream Road, Shrine Road, Penny Pike, Snyder Domer Road, St Paris Pike, Ballentine Pike (North of Rt 41), Upper Valley Pike, Baker Road (East of Upper Valley Pike), and Tremont City Road. The state of Ohio maintains the state highways.

German Township’s 2-man maintenance department maintains the remaining eighty-six roads, over forty road miles.

Resurfacing our roads is expensive and inconvenient. Let me review our options, some pros and cons and cost per road mile.

Road information:

Chip and Seal – a liquid asphalt is sprayed followed by a layer of stone chips.

- Lifespan: 6-8 years

- Pros: Lower cost, good traction, prevents water intrusion

- Cons: Less durable than asphalt, rougher surface

Asphalt pavement/overlay – Hot mix asphalt is laid and rolled creating a solid smooth

surface

- Lifespan: 10-20 years

- Pros: smooth, highly durable, long lifespan

- Cons: High initial cost

Cost per mile of road:

- Chip and seal - $30,000

- Asphalt overlay - $180,000
